Bill Velos, 95, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 in Westview Health Care Center.
Mr. Velos was born May 23, 1914 in Wallowa, OR to Henry and Rissie (Clemens) Liles. He grew up and attended school in Portola, CA before doing logging for his grandfather. Bill then worked for the railroad, and supplied ice for an icehouse for a fish company in northern California.
In 1937 Mr. Velos came to Sheridan and worked for numerous ranches in the Sheridan area. He married Eileen Casey April 14, 1951. She died July 29, 1981.
Bill went to work as a boiler plant operator for the U. S. Navy in Hathorne, NV in 1959 until 1973 when he retired due to ill health. He then returned to Sheridan.
Mr. Velos was a member of the Catholic Church, the American Legion, and the Eagle’s #186 in Sheridan. He enjoyed working on diesel engines, fishing, playing cribbage, watching the Brave’s play baseball, and spending time with his family.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one son.
He is survived by four sons, William and Pat Velos, both of Sheridan, WY, Gary “Corkey” Velos, of Ranchester, WY; one daughter, Donna Bumgartner, of Sheridan, WY; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.
No services are planned. Champion Ferries Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
