Floyd A. Songer, 86, passed away at Sheridan Memorial Hospital after a number of illnesses.

Floyd was born to Edith (Fordyce) and Floyd Songer, Sr. on October 13, 1924 in Buffalo, Wyoming. He was raised and went to school in Big Horn living alternately with his Grandmother and other families. He graduated from high school in 1942 and enlisted in the US Army. After completing basic training he spent time in California as an Artillery Trainer and then attended Officer Candidate School, graduating in 1943. He saw action in the South Pacific and then later was assigned to duties with Occupation Forces in Japan. He was discharged in 1946 as a Second Lieutenant and obtained the rank of Captain in the Army Reserves. In 1946 he met Agnes Ballek marrying her in 1949. Together they raised 4 children. In 1949 he began his sales career with Scales Motor Inc., which later became Cook Ford Sales. He compiled an outstanding sales career spanning 61 years. Accomplishments included the 40 Year Distinguished Service Award from Ford Motor Company, and the longest standing Sales Consultant in the nation; under one Ford franchise and consistent ranking as one of the top fifty Sales Consultants in Ford’s Denver District. By the end his sales career he had sold in excess of 15,000 vehicles. Later he became the Training Coordinator and Public Relations Officer with Freemont Motor. Health issues forced him to stop working in 2007 at the age of 83. He devoted a great deal of his time to various community organizations and activities; serving as American Legion Post Commander and then as Athletic Officer for 12 years. He was active in the American Legion Baseball Program and the Web Wright Little League Baseball program and spent several years as announcer for the Legion Baseball games. Floyd spent 54 years as a member of the Lion’s Club, serving as Chapter President, Zone Chairman, and received the Outstanding Lion of The Year Award. Floyd also devoted time to the American Junior Bowling Program. In 1963 he served as Chairman for the Sheridan County Diamond Jubilee Celebration. In 1980 he was named as the Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Wyoming Association of Life Underwriter’s. He volunteered time with the Sheridan Athletic Association and has been an Elk’s Club member for 47 years.

Floyd is survived by his wife, Agnes Songer; 4 children Diana Nipps (Jim) and her daughters Christie Lee (Dale) of Sheridan, Jennifer Castro (Charlie) of Fontana, CA; Dan Songer (Vicky)of Gilbert, AZ and his daughter Heather Songer of Puyallup, WA; Dennis Songer and his sons Dustin (Karine), Dalton of Sheridan and daughter Samantha Songer of Casper, WY; Don Songer and his daughters Chelsie Songer and Alicia Sorensen all of Sheridan and 2 great grand-daughters Mariah Castro and Alexis Barrett; one brother Gene Songer of Sheridan and one sister Lorraine Burgess of Eugene, OR and half-brother David Pettibone of Evanston, WY and half-sister Jean Peyser of Thayer, MO and step-brother Bernard Sere (Barb) of Sheridan.

Floyd was preceded in death by one brother, John Songer of La Crescent, MN and sisters, Beverly Savage of Lake Havasu, AZ and LaVaughn Songer.

A viewing will be held Friday (Jan. 21st) from 11:00am until 7:00pm at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral liturgy will be held at 10:00am on Saturday from Holy Name Catholic Church. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Military rites are by the American Legion and Wyo. National Guard. A reception will follow the internment at the Holy Name Parish Hall. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
