Funeral service for George Dale “Pete” Garland will be held Friday, December 23, 2011, at 1:00pm from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Dale passed away Friday, December 16th in Sheridan County Memorial Hospital due to complications from pneumonia. Viewing will be held Thursday (Dec. 22nd) from 2:00 until 5:00pm at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, Elks Section. Memorials may benefit the First United Methodist Church, building fund.
Dale was born in Story, WY on June 11, 1915. He was one of five sons born to George Morel Garland and Inez Leacock Garland. He also had one sister, Faye, who died as an infant.
The Garland boys lived, worked and were schooled at several ranches around Story and Buffalo, WY. Dale completed his sophomore year of high school before finding his way to the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC’s) in the 1930’s. There he received training as a heavy equipment mechanic. He helped build U.S. Forest Service roads in Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota.
George was married to Rena LaNell Adams of Dayton, WY. They had on son, Lanny Dale of Patzquoro, Mexico, who survives him.
In 1944, He married Ethel Mae Cook. Dale and Ethel were married 59 years. During their marriage he worked at the Sheridan Pontiac Garage until he was recruited by Peter Kiewit Sons Construction Company. He worked for them over 40 years becoming a foreman and a job supervisor. This job took him to work sites in Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Colorado. He retired to Sheridan in 1982 maintaing his home and assisting life long friends. He also enjoyed travel with his daughter to Alaska, Mexico and Hawaii.
Dale and Ethel are survived by their daughter Twila Dalene Barnes & husband Allan of Vancouver, WA and son Douglas Craig Garland of Casper, WY. Dale was also survived by his younger brother Walter Garland of Buffalo, WY.
Dale was a member of the Eagles Fraternity for 66 years and was the state president in 1956. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge for 45 years. He was a Free Mason and an honorary lifetime member of the Union of Operating Engineers.
